Meet Bob
Photographer, hiker, backpacker
Photography has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, but one passion has endured for 40 years: the Grand Canyon. From the moment I first saw its majestic beauty at the south rim, I was captivated. Over the decades, my connection to the Canyon has only grown stronger. Now, I would like to share that passion with you.
My camera isn’t just a tool—it’s my trusted companion. From rugged trails to starlit skies, it captures the soul of my adventures. The Grand Canyon, with its vastness, shifting hues, and ancient stories, holds a special place in my heart. I don’t just visit; I immerse myself, creating a visual diary that reflects my deep bond with this natural wonder.
In the beginning, I focused on the breathtaking views from the south and north rims. But the Canyon soon pulled me deeper, inviting me to explore its hidden depths. Following the Colorado River, discovering tributary creeks, and venturing into side canyons became my obsession.
Even after all these years, I’ve only scratched the surface of what the Grand Canyon offers. Each visit reveals new wonders, more stories to capture, and memories to cherish.
If you share a love for the outdoors or have your own stories, I’d love to hear them!
Combining the Grand Canyon with Milky Way photography has become my latest obsession, fueled by my lifelong passion for astronomy. My interest in the stars began early—my graduation gift from grammar school was a telescope, and when I graduated from high school, I treated myself to a larger one. These days, I’m content focusing on wide-field photography with my camera, capturing the beauty of the night sky above the Canyon.
Bob's Grand Canyon Photography Resume
I have an extensive collection of Grand Canyon photographs that spans over four decades. Hiking and backpacking in the Grand Canyon have been a part of my life for most of that time, and I’ve logged more than 2,100 miles on its trails and backcountry routes. I’ve explored all the major trails, many minor ones, and even ventured into areas with no trails at all. Some trips took me along unmaintained, cairned, or uncairned backcountry routes, while others had me following creek beds and side canyons just to see where they might lead. Altogether, I’ve spent more than seven months of my life living in the Canyon during multi-day backpacking trips. My collection of photographs from these adventures includes many from the early days of film photography.
I’m also proud to be the creator of the Grand Canyon Explorer website, which I started in the very early days of the Internet. My goal was to share my Grand Canyon photography and provide useful information for visitors. It was the first website dedicated to the Grand Canyon and only the second on the Internet devoted to any National Park. In fact, it predated the National Park Service website by several years. At one point, I even published the website in CD-ROM format so people could access its content offline. I donated a portion of the proceeds from those CD sales to The Grand Canyon Trust, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the Grand Canyon and the Colorado Plateau. In those early Internet days, my website received numerous awards.
Some of my Grand Canyon photographs have been published in textbooks, and I was honored to be featured in the 2007 Arizona Weather Calendar, a project by KPNX (Channel 12) in Phoenix, Arizona.
