About the Raven
I came across the raven that I use for my logo while walking along the Rim Trail at the south rim of the Grand Canyon late one afternoon. The shadows in the Canyon were deepening and the colors were glorious and the raven was just perched right there on the edge of the abyss taking in the scene. I could not help but stop and wonder "What is going through your mind brother raven?" Ravens are frequently not alone and perhaps it was waiting for its mate or a friend to play with. Or was it simply enjoying the view. Who can say?
The raven has always been one of my favorite birds. They have been frequent companions on hiking and backpacking trips, and I always enjoy watching them and even listening to them. The acrobatics that a pair of them can perform in the sky are astounding and they have an incredible vocabulary composed of various sounds. They make clicks and chirps and squawks and some that just cannot be explained. They are incredibly intelligent and very social animals. They mate for life and spend a lot of time raising their young and teaching them the tricks of the trade. Never turn your back on a raven if there is anything around camp small enough for them to take off with or it could very well disappear. Zippered pockets won't help as they have figured out zippers. Apparently they have not figured out Velcro... yet.
