Raven Taking In the View, Rim Trail, Grand Canyon Village, July 2004

This shot of a raven overlooking the Grand Canyon is one of those rare, lucky moments that I’ll never forget. It’s easily one of my favorite photographs, not just because of how it turned out, but because of the special memories tied to it. I took this during a trip to the Grand Canyon with my sister and nephew in July of 2004. We were walking along the Rim Trail near Grand Canyon Village when we spotted this raven perched right on the edge, seemingly lost in the view—just like we were.

I love how the silhouette of the raven contrasts against the vast canyon behind it. The late afternoon shadows stretching across the landscape, along with the sunlight scattered on the rock beside the bird, add an extra touch of magic to the scene. Sometimes, everything just falls into place perfectly, and this was one of those moments.
