Grand Canyon Bighorn Sheep - Bright Angel Trail, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, October, 2001

This photograph was taken on the final day of a ten-day backpacking trip, as we made our way from Indian Garden (now Havasupai Gardens) back to the South Rim. We were in the upper reaches of the Bright Angel Trail when we suddenly came across a small herd of Grand Canyon bighorn sheep. To our amazement, two males were locked in a battle for dominance, crashing their skulls together in a display of raw power. We watched for several minutes until one finally conceded defeat and moved off.

There was no great way to capture the action, but I managed to get this shot of the victorious male as he stepped onto a small ledge beside the trail, gazing out over the lower canyon. The way his silhouette stands out against the cliffs of the South Rim makes this one of my favorite moments from the trip. Witnessing such an incredible display of nature up close was an unforgettable experience.
