Ottoman Amphitheater from Clear Creek Trail
Ottoman Amphitheater from Clear Creek Trail, March, 2019
Every time I reach this breathtaking view of the Ottoman Amphitheater along the Clear Creek Trail, I get chills. No matter how many times I’ve hiked this route, the sight never loses its magic. In the distance, the North Rim stretches out, with Ariel Point on the left, Francois Matthes Point in the center, and Thor Temple standing tall on the right.
At this point, there’s still about a mile to go before reaching Clear Creek and the camping area. That last stretch includes a steep, rocky, and sometimes crumbly descent into the bed of Clear Creek—one last challenge before the reward. But after nearly nine miles of hiking from Bright Angel Campground or Phantom Ranch, it’s always a relief to know you’re almost there.
