Elves Chasm - Elves Chasm, April 2002
This photo is from another campsite survey project I had the privilege of working on in collaboration with Grand Canyon National Park and the Grand Canyon Hikers and Backpackers Association. It was taken on the fourth day of our trip after descending the Point Huitzil Route to the Royal Arch Trail, eventually reaching Toltec Beach on the Colorado River.
Elves Chasm was a special side trip from our camp at Toltec Beach before we continued on to Garnet Canyon, where we set up camp at the end of day four. This was my third visit to Elves Chasm—my first was during a river trip with my wife in May 1997, and the second was a solo adventure in April/May 1998. It’s a truly mesmerizing place, tucked away in the heart of the Grand Canyon, and one that few visitors ever get to experience unless they’re on a river trip. Because of its remoteness, it’s not often the focus of a planned hike, which makes each visit feel even more special.
