Colorado River view from the top of the Little Nankoweap Route, Top of Little Nankoweap Route, April, 2005

This photograph is from another backpacking trip with some incredible memories. There was one disappointment on this trip, in not being able to reach the Kolb Natural Bridge during an attempted day hike to it. But the ending to the trip made up for that disappointment.

I had originally planned to hike in and out of the Canyon using something called the Marion-Seiber Route, which I had never used before. I decided against using this route on the way in because of the amount of water, from melting snow, I could hear flowing down it. After talking with some ranger friends at the bottom, and hearing their story of coming in on this route, I decided against using it as an exit strategy. We ended up discussing another little-used route out of the Canyon known as the Little Nankoweap Route, which exits he Canyon at the far eastern end of Boundary Ridge on the north rim, and decided to give that a try. It ended up being a challenging little exercise in a couple of places but we did manage to get back out to the north rim using it.

The view from the north rim, of the Colorado River flowing down through the Canyon, seen in this photograph made it all worth it. Since I had an extra night on my itinerary, due to a change in plans, I decided to spend the night out here, while my ranger friends who did not have that option, headed back to the parking area at the Saddle Mountain trailhead. It was very windy up on the rim I did not even bother trying to setup my tent, and just spread out my air mattress and sleeping bag beneath a Utah Juniper. Luckily the night was a little warmer than expected, and waking to this view in the morning, and seeing the sun rise over the eastern rim was magnificent.
