Morning sun in the Granite Gorge

Morning sun in the Granite Gorge, Clear Creek Trail, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, March, 2019

This breathtaking view of the Granite Gorge and the South Rim of the Grand Canyon was captured along the Clear Creek Trail during a backpacking trip to Clear Creek. It’s taken from about a mile and a half up the trail, just before reaching the Tonto Platform—a wide, open expanse we would traverse for several miles on our journey. At this moment, we were roughly two hours into the hike from our camp at Bright Angel Campground, and the sense of adventure was in full swing.

In the distance, the two distinct points on the South Rim stand out—Yavapai Point on the left and Hopi Point on the right, with Grand Canyon Village nestled between them. Below, the Colorado River snakes through the depths of the Inner Gorge, and the Black Suspension Bridge, connecting the North and South Kaibab Trails, is clearly visible spanning the river. If you look closely, you can even spot the lower section of the South Kaibab Trail winding its way down.

Moments like this remind me why I keep coming back—there’s nothing quite like these views, earned step by step along the trail.
